Video Poker is a popular game that can be wagered on in casinos across the world, or alternatively at your house on your home computer, using a net account. The rules are very straightforward and consist of the player trying to get the best combination of cards as you can in order to win money. In this respect it is much the same as a classic game of poker, without the involvement with competing players. Of course, techniques used in a real-life game of poker, like tricking, will be irrelevant in Video Poker.

The game of Video Poker begins when the bettor puts credits (whether it is tokens, tickets or money) into the machine and presses the deal button. A 5 card hand will then be electronically ‘distributed’ on the screen.

The Electronic Poker machine also has buttons with ‘hold’ printed on them, and enthusiasts should now decide which cards to hold and which to discard. For the cards the enthusiast wishes to retain, the ‘hold’ buttons need to be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can decide to keep any amount of cards they want, from all to none.

After the player has chosen which cards he or she would like to keep, the player will then press ‘draw’, at which point any fresh cards are handed out if desired. The round is now completed, with the Video Poker machine scanning the cards to see if it matches any of the winning hands printed on the payment schedule.

Generally, the lowest succeeding hand on an Electronic Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the prize money growing for each better hand. A list of common winning hands starts with jacks or better, and moves on to two pairs, 3 of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and finally royal flushes. It should be known that the payout schedule can change from game to game, so that skillful bettors are able to select the most money-making ones every instance.

After the initial round has completed, the player can either choose to stay on in an attempt to maximize their winnings, or they can press the ‘collect’ button to cash out any money that has been won. Additionally, some versions of the game give the bettor a chance to double their winnings, in which situation a further round is played. There are also variations among specific machines, with some decks of cards having wild cards and other varying aspects to enhance playability.
